Luffa gourds are doubly useful: the young fruits make an excellent zucchini substitute when harvested at one inch in diameter or less, while mature 14–24 inch fruits can be retted and dried for use as natural sponges or filters. The vining plants also produce pretty, bright yellow flowers.
