This Italian heirloom, known in France since around 1850, produces egg-shaped fruits 5 to 7 inches long in purple with irregular white stripes — a unique variety pleasing to both the eye and the palate. Mature plants are drought-tolerant and set fruit well under high heat, and the thin skin does not need to be peeled before cooking.
